[3] A-2 (2016) is a physical representation of ‘The stitch’ as a metaphor for the fixing, binding component of a larger network. I am particularly interested in the manipulation of material itself or its connotations. I sought about exploring textile/ installation art that displays tension, reliance, impermanence, strength but also weakness; all characteristics I wished to embody in this physical outcome. I am interested in the portrayal of weakness, or tension from an otherwise soft comforting and mostly positively associated material or process, and the process of inflicting these negative characteristics on the material/ stitch.
[3] A-2 (2016) is an installation comprised of a single latex strip, stitched into by a domestic sewing machine, when pulled taught. Once stitched into when stretched, the stitch becomes loose, irregular and so is rendered useless. No longer having any impact on the latex, the latex in fact acts upon the stitch. The bunched, loose and coiled stitch represents the supporting/binding figure within a straining network, which has now been tested, and tension applied. Ultimately, I wished to create a piece of work both physically creating tension but also creating atmospheric tension when viewed. Drawing upon earlier research into Installation Art and heightened perception, interrupting both the viewers gaze and step, I am attempting to heighten spatial awareness, and awareness of the body in the viewer. Hoping that as they precariously navigate the taught latex strip to view the work, the viewer becomes increasingly aware of their own body and its influence on both the work and others viewing it. The work comments on the possiblity of tension applied to an individual from external sources and the surrounding environment.
