Untitled (2016) is the product of a collaboration, with Veronica Skerrett, Amy Arrowsmith and Bethany Skinner following a university trip to Berlin. Uprising, Liberation, Community, Diversity, The Past, The Present, The Future.
Untitled (2016) aims to represent each, responding to not only a research trip to Berlin, where we saw how the iconic city has grown through the decades following it's historic events, but also a response to the society we live in today. How layers represent people, sub-communities or groups that can be seen for their individual identity but also seen as a whole, celebrating growth as people together. Using a material; concrete, associated with Berlin and many examples of brutalist architecture that surround us. The work attempts to manipulate and transfigure a hard and harsh material, that may be associated with negative connotations, celebrating the beauty it actually holds. As a very process led work, we constructed a production line and sequence of actions to make the sculpture, placing emphasis on the process and its laborious, repetitive nature. Hand mixing and making several batches encouraged differences in hues, texture, and thicknesses within the slabs, of which was intentional to further emphasise diversity.
