You don't want to smell like an armpit. (2017) invites speculation, contemplation and an invasion of privacy. It opens intimate conversation between family for the ears of all. The conversation is free from confounds and pressures, flowing organically – the subjects are unware they’re being recorded.

The conversation; collected and presented using my Iphone, can be listened to by two participants at one time through a single set of headphone. Adding an additional element of invasion of the participant’s own privacy and personal space, the experience is intimate. It is playful, raw and unedited.

Although, I invade other’s privacy, I offer the viewer my own highly personal device – my phone, passcode free. A reciprocal, or mutual exchange occurs between the subjects, the viewer and myself.

Whilst, You don't want to smell like a armpit. (2017) is documented and noted on my artist webpage, it is not be available to be experienced or listened to. This decision preserves the privacy of those involved, and echoes the nature of conversation and the ‘you had to be there’ characteristic of it. Those present, experience a feeling of privilege, whilst an element of privacy for the subjects is maintained. Conversation is fleeting, and so is the availability of this work.
